Common scams
Impersonation scams
Impersonation scams can come in the form of a phone call from someone claiming to be a MyRepublic technician or customer service officer. They may call from a local number with a ‘+65’ prefix and mislead you to believe that your account has been compromised, or offer to troubleshoot your mobile and/or internet connection. They would ask for your personal information, account information, passwords, bank/card details, or OTP before providing further assistance. Do not engage with the caller and do not disclose confidential information.
Phishing scams
Phishing scams can take the form of emails or SMSes that may appear to be sent from MyRepublic, but are instead sent from malicious organisations. Scammers attempt to trick customers into giving away sensitive personal data such as login IDs, passwords, credit card numbers by offering rewards or false information. The data is then used to gain access to important accounts and can lead to identity theft or financial loss. Be wary and avoid clicking on suspicious links and attachments.
Robotic calls
Robotic calls are automated calls that deliver pre-recorded voice messages over the phone. They may call from local number with a ‘+65’ prefix and may claim to be from MyRepublic. They trick customers to verify identities by giving away personal information such as phone numbers, NRIC/FIN numbers, and card details. Do not engage with the caller should you encounter one.
Safeguard yourself
#1
Use a strong password that is not easy for others to guess and change it on a regular basis. Before logging in, always check that your connection to the site is secure by looking for a lock icon on your browser’s address bar.
#2
Be wary and practise discretion when picking up calls from private numbers, and numbers with a ‘+’ prefix. Hang up the call if callers are unable to verify their identity. Click here for useful tips on preventing spam calls.
#3
Never reveal and share personal particulars, passwords, OTPs, bank account and debit/credit card numbers with unknown callers.
#4
Spot spoofs and avoid clicking on any suspicious links or attachments in emails and SMSes. Take extra precautions and check our list of official domains below. When in doubt, do not hesitate to contact us to verify the authenticity of such emails and requests.
#5
Recent scams have exploited QR codes. You may be led to a malicious website that will request for your personal details or confidential information. Exercise caution when scanning QR codes, and always check the URL of the website.
#6
Download the ScamShield app to block unsolicited incoming calls and text messages from a database managed by the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) and Singapore Police Force (SPF). Visit scamshield.org.sg for more details.
