Selecting your nbn™ plan

The following information has been designed to help you select the right plan.

The nbn™ network is being rolled out across the country to deliver internet and home phone services using a mix of technologies (Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), Fixed Wireless (FW), Fibre to the Node (FTTN), Fibre to the Basement (FTTB) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC), which will replace the current Copper Telecommunications Infrastructure.

To ensure you continue to have access to a broadband and home phone service you must switch to the nbn™ network within 18 months from when nbn™ became available at your address. After this period the old copper network will be switched off.

For nbn™ services that are connected via Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC), you can choose either the Essential plan (uses nbn™ 50) or Premium plan (uses nbn™ 100). Speeds are variable^.

For nbn™ services that are connected via Fixed Wireless (FW) the only available plan is the Unlimited Essential plan (uses nbn™ 50) due to the maximum download speed of Fixed Wireless technology being 50Mbps nominal access line speed. Speeds are variable^.

For FTTN, FTTB or FTTC services, you can enter your address into the Service Qualification tool and you will be provided with an indication of line speed by nbn™ we will also tell you if you if your service is in co-existence. The maximum line speed provided by nbn™ doesn’t take into consideration the quality of the copper connecting your premises, the quality of your internal wiring or that exchange based ADSL &/or special services may co-exist on the same network infrastructure, all of these factors can affect your speed. If your service has been identified as being in co-existence area we recommend selecting the Essential plan (uses nbn™ 50). Once your service is active, if you are receiving download speeds close to 50Mbps, contact Customer Service if you want to upgrade to the  Premium plan (uses nbn™ 100), once active we will conduct a line speed test to ensure that this Unlimited Premium plan is right for you. Speeds are variable^.

The MyRepublic Unlimited Essential plan (uses nbn™ 50 – speeds are variable) provides maximum speeds of up to 50 Mbps download and 20Mbps upload.

This is a good plan that provides enough bandwidth for downloading large files, streaming services like Netflix and Stan, playing your favourite music, enjoying online gaming, keeping up to date on social media and video calling with friends and family near and far.

When multiple household members are connected to your MyRepublic service at the same time, they will all be using the available bandwidth of your MyRepublic nbn™ service. The more people online at once, the less bandwidth to go round. If you have a lot of people online in data heavy scenarios like Gaming and Streaming or you do a lot of uploading, consider the nbn™ 100 plan.

The MyRepublic Unlimited Premium plan (uses nbn™ 100 – speeds are variable) provides maximum speeds of up to 100 Mbps download and 40Mbps upload (nominal access line speed).

This is a great plan for larger households (or small households who don’t like to wait!)  The nbn™ 1000 provides ample bandwidth for downloading large files, streaming services like Netflix and Stan, playing your favourite music, enjoying online gaming, keeping up to date on social media and video calling with friends and family near and far as well as a higher upload rate if you upload a lot of files.

When multiple household members are connected to your MyRepublic service at the same time, they will all be using the available bandwidth of your MyRepublic nbn™ service. The more people online at once, the less bandwidth to go round. If you have a lot of people online in data heavy scenarios like Gaming and Streaming, consider the nbn™ 100 plan.

Learn more about internet speeds

The following information has been designed to help provide clarity regarding what actual speeds you can expect when connected to the nbn™ via the different network access technologies, and the factors that can affect your internet speed.

The main factors that can affect your internet speed/performance are:

  • nbn™ technology type
  • nbn™ co-existence period
  • nbn™ speed tier provisioned on your service
  • Quality of the fibre and/or copper telecommunication infrastructure servicing your address
  • Network capacity
  • Home set-up

Co-existence means that your connection will share infrastructure with older copper services which will impact the speed that you can receive. 18-month after the initial rollout of the nbn™ the old copper services will be switched off, ending co-existence period and enabling you to achieve maximum possible line speed.

nbn™ Technology Type

nbn™ is utilising a multi technology mix for the roll out of the nbn™ across Australia. As a result, different nbn™ technologies have different tiers (nominal access line speeds).

A user’s experience, including the actual line speeds achieved over the nbn™ network will vary due to various factors, as outlined below (wiring, usage and weather).

In most circumstances, the actual speed being received will be less than the nbn™ tier available for that technology.

From there the existing copper technology in the building is used to connect to the wall sockets in each apartment.

nbn™  50 or nbn™ 100 tier Co-Existance Period – an 18 month period whereby customers transitioning to nbn™ FTTN/FTTB services will generally receive slower download and upload speeds to ensure that existing DSL and legacy phone services are able to co-exist with the newer  nbn™ services

Optical fibre is run close to your premises connecting to s small Distribution Point Unit (DPU) generally located inside the pit in the street.

From there this will then connect with the existing copper network to the wall socket in your premises

You will then connect an nbn™ connection device to the wall socket in order to access the nbn™ network.

Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)

 

Optical fibre is run to the nearest available fibre node / cabinet in the street.

This will then connect with a HFC cable which runs all the way to an nbn™ utility box on the outside of your premises.

A cable then connects the utility box to a wall socket in the premises.

Fixed Wireless (FW) An outdoor antenna on your roof receives a signal from a fixed nbn™ wireless tower.

This antenna is connected to a nbn™ connection box inside your premises.

As more premises access the internet (particularly in peak periods 7 – 11pm) the more pressure (congestion) it puts on a service providers network. As the congestion increases slower broadband speeds will be experienced by users. Congestion issues can be managed by each service provider by purchasing more bandwidth (capacity) from nbn™ as well as the way a service provider configures and shapes their network (network management).

MyRepublic has been built specifically to maximise the user experience on the nbn™. We use our own web traffic priority optimisation system to help ensure that time sensitive applications like video streaming remain smooth while also remaining flexible for heavy downloading scenarios.

The MyRepublic team is constantly monitoring the network to help provide the best user experience available.

Hardware:

The quality and condition of your modem / router can affect your internet experience. A device that has been provided by your service provider and certified to work with the nbn™ network will ensure optimal performance, that is why all MyRepublic connections come with a MyRepublic modem optimised for use on our network.

Wi-Fi:

The Wi-Fi on your modem / router uses radio signals to transmit data to your connected devices. As a result, the performance of your Wi-Fi can be affected by the location of where you place your device. It should be placed in a central location so that the Wi-Fi signal can travel unimpeded, and away from other electronic devices which may cause interference (microwaves, TV’s).

All the modem / routers MyRepublic provides have AC wireless technology which will perform better than ones with the older N technology.

Internal Wiring:

The condition of the copper lines / wall sockets within your premises can impact on your nbn™ experience. The copper maybe damaged or suffering from corrosion, the wall socket connections loose or poorly connected. This predominately relates to FTTB / FTTN connections.

Number of users / devices online at the same time:

When there are multiple users / devices connected to the internet at the same time those users are all sharing the available bandwidth. As the number of users increases the slower the speed experience will be for all.

As an example, think of the nbn™ network as a highway, and MyRepublic as the gateway to the highway. During off-peak hours traffic should flow freely and quickly. However, during peak periods when traffic on the highway increases, the speed by which traffic flows on the highway will decrease.

The ability to manage that traffic, as well as having enough capacity to cater for the increase in traffic can help alleviate congestion / slow speed issues.

MyRepublic’s own traffic priority optimisation system and network capacity helps ensure that congestion issues are not experienced by our customers.

MyRepublic provides the choice of either the nbn™ 50 or 100 Speed Tier (nominal access line speed). This depends on your location and the nbn™ technology servicing your address at time of connection.

For customers connected to the nbn™ via FTTN or FTTB, at service qualification we provide information on nbn’s™ estimated nominal access line speed available at your location at time of connection. This will determine the nbn™ Speed Tiers from which you can select at sign up. FTTN and FTTB speeds to be confirmed when active, you can downgrade your speed tier to nbn™ 50 by contacting Customer Service.

The nbn™ Speed Tiers stated above are the maximum theoretical access line speeds that can be delivered over the nbn™. MyRepublic makes no guarantees of any kind on the actual speed that will be achieved by any individual user as we rely on our supplier to ensure services are provisioned to deliver optimum speeds at all times. Actual speeds may be slower than the nominal access line speed and can vary due to a range of factors such as the content being downloaded by the end-user, your distance and the quality of the copper from the node or basement for FTTN and FTTB services, backhaul networks, and your hardware and software configuration. Devices connected by Wi-Fi may experience slower speeds than those connected by Ethernet cable.

Co-Existence Period: A Co-Existence Period may exist for services using nbn™ FTTB and FTTN. During this period exchange based ADSL and/or special services may co-exist on the same network infrastructure as the nbn™ services. In this case, your speed will be affected due to interference from equipment or network provided by other services.

Frequently Asked Questions

The following information has been designed to help provide clarity regarding your move to the nbn™.

If you are still within your minimum contract term, we will upgrade your broadband service to the nbn™ and your contract term will continue. For example if you have 6 months remaining on your 12 month contract term with your ADSL connection we will roll over the remaining contract period to your new nbn™ service.

No, all MyRepublic modems are ADSL and nbn™ compatible. For guidance on how to use your modem on the nbn™ please use the Quick Start Guide.

  • A new connection will vary depending on if you have current technology in place or if you need an onsite appointment with a technician.
  • Generally, a new connection can take between 3-20 business days.
  • Please don’t disconnect your service until you have been advised by us that your MyRepublic service is up and running.
  • Look out for further communications from MyRepublic about your connection, we will contact you:
    • If we need to schedule an appointment at your premises and you need to be in attendance. When there is a network appointment to facilitate your service connection, usually the activation of your service will be completed within 2 days of this appointment, we will confirm when it is time to plug in your modem and connect to the MyRepublic network via Email & SMS – look out for these.
  • If at any time you need to follow up on the progress of your nbn™ upgrade, go to the Contact Us page and complete the Order Enquiry Form.
  • Please note, if you are in an nbn™ New Development or HFC area, connection times can be longer depending on availability of technicians.

Once you have selected your plan and agreed to upgrade your service to the nbn™ we will place your order and your plan change will then take effect from the date your new nbn™ service is activated with MyRepublic.
