By 2020, every Australian household is required to switch to the National Broadband Network (nbn). As of August 2019, 10.2 million homes and businesses can connect to the nbn. This is an increase of three million since the year before.
The national broadband network will provide faster, cheaper internet to 90% of people, including those who live in rural areas. And once the switch to nbn is complete, Australia will be one of the top five broadband-enabled countries.

1. Is nbn compulsory in Australia?
Yes, all Australians are required to switch to the nbn. Even if you’re satisfied with your current provider, at some point, your neighbourhood will be upgraded to fixed-line nbn services.
When that happens, you’ll have to switch to an nbn plan because existing landline and broadband services will be disconnected. So if you try to put off switching to the nbn, you may find yourself without internet access for a period of time.
2. Can I opt-out of nbn?
No, you can’t opt-out of participating in the nbn. But you do have a say about the nbn plan and provider you choose.
The plans are offered at four different download and upload speeds. And there are many different providers you can choose from based on your budget preferences.
And if you strongly dislike your nbn connection, you do have the option to switch to home wireless instead. This means your home internet will be delivered over a mobile network. However, you’ll need a strong mobile reception at your home for this to be an option.
3. How does the nbn work?
The nbn is a high-speed broadband network that’s being implemented by the Australian Government. The goal of the nbn is to provide every home in Australia with a fast, reliable internet connection.
The nbn is designed to replace dated infrastructure with a sturdier and more reliable connection. It uses the following broadband technologies to make this happen:
- Fiber to the premises: With this plan, fiber optics deliver internet straight to your home.
- Fiber to the building (FTTB): With FTTB, fiber optics are supplied to your building, and then a copper cable is used to provide internet access across the building.
- Fiber to the node: With FTTN, fiber optics are supplied to your street, and then internet is delivered to a copper cable that runs into your home.
- Fixed wireless: With fixed wireless plans, receivers are located on the roofs of buildings to receive high-speed internet access.
- Satellite: With this option, the internet is delivered from satellites to receivers across Australia.
4. What does nbn installation involve?
To begin the installation, a technician will install a fiber optic cable to the nbn utility box located on the outside of your home. The technician will then drill a hole in your wall and feed the cable into the connection box. You can contact your internet company to make arrangements before the installation.
5. Is nbn installation free?
Yes, the nbn installation and the equipment included is free of charge. Once the installation is complete, you will have to pay for a monthly nbn plan to pay for your internet usage. If you switch to a new provider, there could be specific activation fees to start using the service.
6. Does nbn affect Foxtel?
No, the nbn installation will not affect Foxtel or any other cable services. During the installation, your technician can install a splitter to ensure that both services can work on the same device. This will ensure that your current cable service has minimal interruptions.
7. Can I get nbn without a phone line?
Yes, you’re not required to have an active landline to connect to the nbn. Most customers choose to use their mobile phones as their primary phone service.
8. How do I connect to the nbn box?
You’ll connect the power cord to the port labeled ‘A’ and then plug the connection box to a nearby power port. Then you’ll connect the telephone cord into the port labeled ‘B’ and the other end into a nearby telephone wall socket.
You’ll then wait for the connection light and the broadband light on the top of the device to turn blue. This could take up to 15 minutes to complete, and you shouldn’t unplug your device while you wait.
9. Where can I put my nbn box?
You can place the nbn box anywhere in your home, but it shouldn’t be in a garage or somewhere where it’ll be difficult to access. You will want to put the nbn box close to a telephone wall socket and power port.
10. What modems are compatible with nbn? Can I use my own modem for nbn?
You’ll need a VDSL2 compatible modem to connect with the nbn. So as long as your current modem is compatible, you can continue using it. If it’s not compatible, your service provider should provide a new modem for free.
